Curriculum

The programme of one block training (6 years) finalises in the Master of Art (MA) in conservation and restoration covering all conservation disciplines and now is divided into four specializations with several pathways of “Conservation and Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Art”:

  • Paintings; movable and wall paintings
  • Sculptures and elements of architecture
  • Textiles
  • Paper, Books, Graphics

The MA Conservation and Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Art is a apart specialization (pathway) as part of the programme of the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Art in Warsaw that can be entered after 4 years of training. MA is double- in theory and practice. Theory’s dissertation is written under the supervision of promoters: prof. dr Iwona Szmelter, prof. dr Andrzej Koss, dr Marzena Ciecha?ska, dr Jacek Martusewicz. Moreover the practical part of MA diploma depends on the main specialisation / or maybe interdisciplinary – a three semester internship in a conservation-training studio is under the supervision of promoters too in the Faculty, sometimes, depending on objects needs, it is realised in situ. Throughout the programme, the knowledge and consultation that can be obtained from the professional community and other universities and colleges.

The conservation and restoration programme has been officially accepted by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage and Ministry of Science and High Education in Poland.

Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art was founded in 1947. In 2007 obtained two times the highest assessment “Excellent” during UKA and PAKA accreditation - Academic Governmental Accreditation (Panstwowa Komisja Akredytacyjna-PAKA plus Uniwersytecka Komisja Akredytacjna-UKA), it is usually accreditation for 5 years (until 2012).


Entry requirements

The entry requirement starts after 4 years of training. The entry exam for Master Course “Conservation and Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Art” is during so called ABSOLUTORIUM EXAM. It means “certificate of completion” of 4,5 years of training and every candidate has to be examined with her/ his project in the field “Conservation and Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Art” - after 1 semester for scientific examination of artwork of contemporary art, recognition, briefly information about project and relation in field of the decision making process.

In the curriculum of the two-year master phase the museums and heritage sites will be exploited, moreover are seminars, lectures that are for the group of students (and exists as a voluntary pathway) in their 5th and 6th year.


Staff

Primarily involved in the MA programme Modern and Contemporary Art Conservation is prof. dr Iwona Szmelter, Programme Leader. Besides her involvement as the leading member of the teaching staff for the MA Modern and Contemporary Art Conservation another academic teacher from the Faculty are involved too (above) and additionally professors of University of Warsaw, University UKSW in Warsaw, scientists from Technical University of Warsaw, WAT in Warsaw, and museum staff, mostly from Warsaw, but also from Lodz, Wroclaw, Torun, Cracow and members from the professional community of professional conservators. They are invited to perform as guest lecturers.


Relation to the field

Besides benefiting from the knowledge and expertise of members from the professional community performing as guest lecturers, students of the programme in Modern and Contemporary Art Conservation are offered.
